The Faculty has a total of 14 full-time teachers. Niu Jian, Professor, Executive Vice DeanProfessor Niu Jian received his MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Liverpool and his PhD in Applied Linguistics from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is the Secretary-General of the Supervisory Committee of ELT in Vocational Higher Education (2006-2010), Ministry of Education. His research interests include English language teaching, testing, open and distance education, and vocational higher education. He is the chief editor of such textbooks as Reading Plus and English Grammar. He is also the co-author of such textbooks as This Is English and Zoom In. Professor Niu Jian has published dozens of academic papers in domestic and overseas journals. He is the award winner of the "Best Paper Silver" at the 19th Annual Conference of Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) in 2005, the first such honor received by a scholar from the Chinese mainland. Research Interests: Contact Information: Liu Dailin, Professor Professor Liu Dailin received her MA in Media-assisted Language Teaching in Britain. She is Director of the Supervisory Committee of ELT in Vocational Higher Education, Ministry of Education as well as a consultant with the Organising Committee of "the Beijing Speaks Foreign Languages Programme" . Since 1979, Professor Liu has taken part in the compilation of English textbooks for OUC students. She has also worked as a presenter for TV English programmes. She is the winner of a variety of awards, such as the first, second and third prizes of the "National Award for Excellent Educational Audio-Visual Programmes" jointly conferred by the General Administration of Press and Publication of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Education. In 1999, she was awarded the title of "Excellent Teacher of Open Universities in China". Professor Liu is among the initiators of the annual national collegiate English speaking contests and debating tournaments. She has undertaken and completed a number of research projects as well as international cooperation projects. Courses Taught: Yang Qining, Associate Professor, Director of the Department of Business English Ms. Yang Qining has been working in OUC for over two decades. She has been engaged in teaching business English and research in business English teaching, research in China's introduction of textbooks from overseas, and the organizational work for teacher training programme outside of China. She is involved in the construction of learning resources for courses such as English Reading, as well as International Business Law, and Reading Business English. Courses Taught: Contact Information: Sun Jianhua, Associate Professor Ms. Sun Jianhua taught English in a high school in her hometown, a university in the provincial capital, and a key university in Beijing before she became a full-time English teacher at OUC. One of her present responsibilities is providing learning support to distance learners. She interacts with distance learners through hosting synchronous and asynchronous Q&A sessions online, giving online tutoring, conducting video conferencing, and live webcasting. Courses Taught: Contact Information: Chang Fengyan, Associate Professor Ms. Chang Fenyang received her MA in Applied Linguistics from Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1997 and another MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham in 1999. She is an experienced teacher of such courses as English Reading, English Pronunciation and Intonation, Listening and Speaking. She has co-authored a number of textbooks, including Reading Plus, Integrated English, and This Is English. She has also undertaken the design and production of the video course of English in Daily Life, and the multimedia learning package This Is English 4. She is the winner of such awards as the "Best Paper Silver" at the 20th Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) Annual Conference in 2006, and the Best Paper Gold at the 21st AAOU Annual Conference in 2007, the first ever such honor received by a scholar from the Chinese mainland. Contact Information: Shi Yunzhi, Lecturer, Director of the English Department Mr. Shi Yunzhi received his MA in TEFL from Beijing Foreign Studies University. He is also an examiner of the Beijing English Testing System (BETS). He has co-authored such books as English for Service Industries (compiled for service industry workers in Beijing), Thesis Writing Series for Open Education of OUC (English Majors in Education and Business Orientation). As a full-time teacher, he is mainly responsible for offering online learning support and doing research related to English language teaching. He has provided consecutive interpreting service for the International Forum on Online Education 2006: Quality Assurance, the Training Workshop for OUC Administrators held in Britain in the summer of 2006, and the 2007 International Distance Education Advanced Forum. Contact Information: Zhang Yuguang, Lecturer, Director of the Office of English for Non-English Majors Ms. Zhang Yuguang received her bachelor's degree in English Language Teaching from the Teachers College of Shanxi University, and MA degree in English Language and Literature from the School of Foreign Languages in Southwest University. She co-authored English Through Literature (published by OUC Publishing House), and took part in the design and production of the web-based course—Integrated English series, which won the "Best Course in China Award (Online Education)" in 2008. She provided consecutive interpreting service for the Training Workshop for OUC Administrators held in Britain in the summer of 2005, the International Forum on Online Education 2006: Quality Assurance, and the International Distance Education Advanced Forum in 2007. Her research interests include English and American literature, distance English language teaching, and computer-assisted language teaching. Courses Taught: Contact Information: Cui Song, Lecturer Mr. Cui Song received his bachelor's degree in English from the Department of Foreign Languages in Beijing Normal University in 1987. He stayed at the university after graduation and became a teacher there. From 1993 to 1996, he was on the editorial board of the journal Foreign Language Teaching in Schools. In 1994, he became a lecturer. From April 2000 to November 2003, he hosted the English language teaching programme Outlook, which was broadcasted on China Central Television. He translated some 70 film scripts, many of which won the "Huabiao Film Award", one of China's premier film awards, and the "Best Dubbed Film of the Spring Swallow Award", and co-translated such books as Selected World Sci-fi Novels, Airborne Electronic Warfare, and Modern Stealth Aircraft. He served as a judge for the National English Talent Competition—"Star of Outlook" three times. Courses Taught: Contact Information: Wu Yan, Lecturer Ms. Wu Yan joined OUC in 1992 after receiving her bachelor's degree from Beijing International Studies University. She has a good understanding of the problems and needs of adult learners of English thanks to her face-to-face teaching experience in the Xuanwu Study Centre and Xicheng Study Centre of OUC. She has been a tutor for such courses as English I ( an English course for non-English majors), English Listening Comprehension, English Teaching Methodology, and English in a Changing World, among others. She has also taken part in the compilation and making of such textbooks and audio-visual packages as TVU English, Integrated English, and This is English. In 2002, she received her M.Ed in Educational Technology and TESOL from the University of Manchester. Her current research interest is in the application of educational technology to language teaching, in particular, the impact of Web 2.0 on distance English language teaching. Contact Information: Liu Mingyuan, Lecturer Ms. Liu Mingyuan joined OUC in 1993. Since then, she has been a tutor for such courses as Japanese, English I (1), This Is English ABC, and a number of other courses. She is responsible for the development of teaching resources and the routine administration of these courses. Courses Taught: Contact Information: Chen Yang, Lecturer Ms. Chen Yang received her MA in Linguistics from the Graduate School in Xi'an International Studies University in 2001, and an MSc in Education, Science and Society from the Graduate School of Education, Bristol University in 2005. She taught English in a conventional university before she joined the OUC in 2001. Since then, she has taught English Teaching Methodology (for diploma and degree students), English Listening Comprehension 1—4 (for Diploma students), Pre-graduation Practice Project for English Majors ( English education orientation for diploma and degree students), English II (1), and English II (2). Currently, she is a tutor responsible for such courses as English in Current Affairs, English Listening Comprehension (2) (4), English II (1), and A Guide to Success (1). She co-authored This is English series (Books 1—3), coordinated the compilation of such textbooks as Teaching English in Primary Schools, English Listening Course 3, and English Listening Course 4. She has taken part in the making of such video courses and live classroom programmes as This Is English 3, This Is English 4, and Teaching English in Primary Schools. The Multimedia Study Package This Is English 3, in which she took part in the development and design, won the Second Prize of 2006 "Haier Computer Cup" in National Universities Courseware Competition. Contact Information: Han Yanhui, Lecturer Mr. Han Yanhui received his MA in English Language and Literature with specialisation in Translation Theory and Practice from Beijing International Studies University and another MA in Information and Communications Technology in Education from the Institute of Education, University of London. He taught English for two years at Beijing International Studies University and was Head of the Section of English Language Teaching there. Then, he joined the Department of Foreign Languages (now the Faculty of Foreign Languages) of OUC. He is now taking charge of Mr. Cui Song's teaching responsibilities. He was appointed by the Department of Foreign Languages to work with the in2english.com.cn, a joint Sino-British English learning project, as a representative from OUC. He was the online editor, zone manager and deputy managing editor there. He has co-authored This Is English series, administered the teaching of Business English, and has taken part in a number of research projects at both the University level and the national level. In addition, he is also an instructor for the Online Teacher Training Programme which is jointly sponsored by Open University of China and the Open University of UK. He is also an advisor of the in2english.com.cn. His research interests include Networked CALL and the application of new technologies such as Web 2.0 to online education.
