
Yunnan Radio and TV University (Yunnan RTVU), located in the city of Kunming. The city boasts its beautiful scenery, fresh flowers all the year round, unique cultures and customs of ethnic minorities.
Yunnan Radio and TV University is equipped with modern educational technologies and is a perfect campus-wide network system accessing CERNET and Internet, which shares good-quality instructional resources with all the institutions of higher learning in China and other provincial OUs. It has connected all the computers in different offices and the six computer sub-nets for instruction and instructional management in open education, which accomplishes on-line instruction and computer-based management. The main campus has established a VBI receiving system, Ku-band satellite receiving system that can receive six channels of satellite education programmes, twenty-four sets of IP broadcasting programmes and eight sets of speech broadcasting programs. It can also receive, relay and broadcast various instructional programmes and transmit the programmes to all the classrooms and offices through the closed-circuit television systems. Besides, it has established a wireless listening system, a live transmission classroom, a two-way multimedia instructional system, a voice telephone information system, audio-visual reading-rooms, multi-purposes audio-visual rooms, a multi-functional auditorium, six language laboratories, an electronic reading-room, and some laboratories and facilities for some specialties such as physics, mechanics, electronic engineering, simulated electronics, languages, computing, simulated accounting, simulated law court, and so on. There are more than 4000 sets of various instructional apparatus and equipment. The library has nearly 100,000 books, and more than 500 periodicals, nearly 50,000 electronic books, more than 7,700,000 electronic papers and 20,000 audio tapes. A two-way interactive video conferencing system linking 16 municipal open universities has been put into operation. These municipal open universities throughout the province have also set up complete closed-circuit television system, Ku-band satellite receiving stations and VBI and IP data receiving equipment. It also has some advanced digital shooting, recording and editing equipment and both large and small studios. The campus intranet accessing Internet has independent domain names and IP addresses.
Yunnan Radio and TV University has a complete instructional net-work that covers the whole province with its municipal and county-level open universities. It offers 9 disciplines with 82 specialities in science, engineering, medicine, agriculture, liberal arts, law, economics, management, and education. The number of its graduates has totalled more than 120,000 and the number of students completing non-degree training has totalled more than 1,000,000. Apart from that, it also offers Chinese language courses for foreign students, such as Modern Chinese, Chinese Literature, and Basic Chinese Writing. These courses are presented by very experienced and skillful teachers. The open universities in Lijiang, Dali, Xishuanbanna and Dehong areas inhabited by ethnic minority people have a group of teachers who make a specific study on the cultures and customs of different nationalities. They can provide instructional information and guidance on learning and suggestions of convenient traveling routes for investigation and research.
Entrance Requirements:
The University practices openness in enrollment of students. Anyone who is in good health and obeys the Chinese laws, and the regulations and rules of Yunnan Radio and TV University can enroll at Yunnan RTVU.
Openness to Students:
The Center for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language accepts those who are recommended by foreign governmental organizations, schools, societies or enterprises. An individual applicant may apply for enrollment directly.
Application Procedures:
- Applicants can obtain the Yunnan Radio and TV University Application Form for Admission for International Students by means of correspondence, E-mail, fax and phone call. The completed form should be mailed or faxed to the Center two months prior to the beginning of classes.
- The Admission Notice and the form of Visa Application for Study in China (JW201 form) will be mailed to the applicant after his/her qualifications are verified.
- Applicants forward the Notice to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in their home country to apply, with Form 202, for X or F visa for entry into China for study. Applicants are required to go through the relevant procedures for residence.
Time for Application:
- Spring semester: September of the preceding year to January of the same year
- Fall semester: March to June every year
- Short-term programme: anytime
Long-term Programmes:
The Center offers 5-month and 10-month Chinese training programmes. Registration for these programmes is available all the year round, although entrance is advisable in early Spring (March) or the late Fall (September). The school recess is twice a year. Winter vacation is from the middle of January to the end of February, and Spring vacation is from early July to late September.
Compulsory Courses:
- Elementary : Basic Chinese, Listening Comprehension, Practical Conversation, Practical Writing, Reading Comprehension
- Intermediate : Intermediate Chinese, Listening and Conversation, Comprehensive Chinese, Newspaper Reading, Practical Writing
- Advanced : Advanced Chinese, Advanced Oral Speaking, Topic Discussion, Newspaper Reading, Practical Writing, A Survey of China
Instructional Features:
Instructional design is student-centered. Courses, teaching methods, class size and timetable can be designed and arranged according to the students' requirements. Both long-term and short-term programmes will be designed in accordance with the students' particular needs. Instruction is organized in pairs, in groups or on a one-to-one basis. Also, according to their language level, the students are divided into three respective classes, the beginner's class, the intermediate class, and the advanced class.
Fieldwork:
Students are organized to participate in various activities regularly each semester and invited to some famous scenic spots in Kunming such as Yunnan Nationalities Village Garden, World Horticulture Expo Garden, specialty parks and markets, flower and plants supermarkets for fieldwork as well as regions such as Lijiang, Dali, Xishuanbanna and Dehong for investigation and research into the cultures and customs of Yunnan nationalities.
Certificate:
Students who have passed examinations are issued certificates after the programmes are finished.
Accommodation:
In order to create real situations for foreign students to improve their Chinese the center leaves students to choose either to live in on-campus dormitories or in off-campus communities.
Short-term Programmes:
Varying from 2 weeks to 4 months, these programmes are designed to train those who learn Chinese as a second language to command basic Chinese pronunciation, basic Chinese grammar and basic Chinese conversation. The registration for short-term programmes is available all the year round, and the time of entrance can be negotiated according to individual needs. The students who pass examinations are issued with certificates after the programmes are finished. The students are organized to participate in various cultural activities and visits around the city.
Optional Courses:
Students have a variety of optional subjects as part of their study programme, Chinese Culture, Chinese Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Customs, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Idioms, Ancient Chinese, Chinese Movies, A Survey of China, Computer-based Chinese Information Processing, Chinese Kungfu and Taiji, and others.
