The major task of the Press is to produce study materials in various forms (radio, TV and Internet) for distance education organized by the Open University of China (OUC). It has produced, published and distributed nearly 1,000 audio-visual and electronic educational products covering some 10 academic fields, including economics, science, engineering, literature, law, agriculture, medical science, linguistics and teacher-training. It has provided study materials to millions of OUC's students. Committed to serving the public, the Press has produced a variety of audio-visual educational products in the fields including basic education, vocational education, agricultural science education, on-the-job training, enterprise management, teacher-training, art education, foreign language teaching, and teaching Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL). The Press works to meet the needs of the society for audio-visual products and has been expanding its publication capacity. In recent years, the annual publication of the Press has reached some 200 titles and is still growing. The educational TV programmes produced by the Press have been broadcast, on a regular basis, on China Educational Television (CETV), TVB Pearl Channel (Hong Kong) and SCOLA network (US). The Press is active in international exchanges and cooperation. It has compiled and published a series of high quality audio-visual educational products for Chinese students cooperating with the British Council, NHK, Stanford University, and UC Berkeley. The Press has made remarkable accomplishments, with 33 titles winning national awards and hundreds of titles being included in the Key Audio-Visual Textbook Project during the 10th Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005). Since 1996, the Press has been responsible for the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) project to produce, publish and distribute educational TV programmes for TCFL. The first series, China Panorama, is China's first multimedia textbook series especially designed for foreign learners of Chinese. This 7,450-minute programme is a milestone that has won top-place rankings. In addition, the Press has also produced the Easy Chinese series, the Understanding Chinese at Work series, and the cultural programme series such as Journey through China. The production, publication and distribution of the New Practical Chinese Reader, a textbook series receiving favorable reviews, is also one of the contributions of the Press. The production, publication and distribution of TCFL textbooks started at a high standard, which OUC has always maintained. Among the 11 textbooks in the China Panorama and Easy Chinese series, 4 have won national awards for textbooks and another 4 have been licensed to overseas publishing houses. Textbooks produced by the Press have also been distributed in nearly 30 countries around the world. The development goal of the Press is to introduce China's cultural and scientific achievements to the world, to contribute to the strategy of "revitalizing the nation through science and education" and to develop China's modern open and distance education and to promote the modernization of education.
