![]() Founded in October 1982, the Publishing House of OUC is a comprehensive university press as well as a professional press for open education under the auspices of the Open University of China (OUC). Featuring the publication of textbooks and academic works related to OUs in China, the Publishing House aims to disseminate knowledge and technology that is conducive to social and economic progress, serve the teaching and research needs of OUs, and contribute to the socialist economic construction. Over the past two decades, it has adhered to such goals and grown into a well-known and influential university press. It has become the center for textbooks used in OUs throughout China. The Publishing House, supported by OUC and a strong team of contributors, publishes not only textbooks and reference books, but also scholarly works on modern distance education, books on adult education, and general books. By the end of 2007, it had published some 4,000 titles and sold over 400 million copies. It publishes over 1,000 titles of books and electronic materials every year, with an annual sales volume exceeding RMB 400 million. Among the publications, 80% are reprints and 90% are textbooks and scholarly works. Many titles have won national or local prizes. It has also set up a publication fund to subsidize the publication of quality textbooks and scholarly works. The Publishing House adopts the president responsibility system under the leadership of the board of directors. The Board Chairman is the President of OUC. Its current President is Liu Chen, the Editor-in-Chief is Ren Yan, and the Vice Presidents are Li Jun and Kuang Tianjian. It has 40 editors, 15 of whom are chief editors. Its major scope of business is as follows: (1) publication of textbooks for OUs and scholarly works, in particular, works that reflect the latest developments in modern distance education; (2) publication of textbooks and reference books for adult education; and (3) other books that serve the education of OUs. By now, these three product lines have been established. As OUC aims to become an open university with unique Chinese characteristics and major international influence in the 21st century, and as the country intends to further develop adult higher education, the Publishing House is also keen on making its own contribution by relying on the resources of OUC, catering to the demand of the entire country, and gradually building an international brand recognition. Our goal is, by 2010, we could become a leading press with unique Chinese characteristics that publishes high-level and high-quality scholarly works in social sciences, natural sciences, and management science, as well as textbooks for adult higher education; we could have leading contributors, editors, publication staff, distribution staff, and management staff; we could employ modern publication, management and operation methods; we could further consolidate our comprehensive capacity, better serve the society, and operate and manage in an efficient manner; and we could meet the demand of China’s development in higher education.
